Bridgewater was most successful hedge fund of 2018

Bridgewater Associates again topped the list of the best performing hedge funds in 2018, according to the latest annual ranking by LCH Investments, in what was a tough year generally for the industry.

The world’s biggest hedge fund with $150 billion of assets under management made a net $8.1 billion gain in 2018. Renaissance Technologies also performed well, making investors $4.7 billion.

But the returns of these two funds accounted for almost half of all the top 20 managers last year with many making a loss as they struggled with volatility in the markets. Six in very ten hedge funds lost money last year lost money.

Bridgewater also topped annual ranking of managers by their overall profits since inception. Since it was formed in 1975, it has made net gains of $57.8 billion.
