Offshore law firm Harneys has expanded its global funds team by hiring two partners and one senior associate to the firm’s investment funds practice in the Cayman Islands.

Ian Gobin, Matthew Taber and Jonathan Bernstein all join the team from Appleby.

Gobin currently serves as a partner for Appleby, and until recently was global head of funds and investment services.

Taber and Bernstein, counsel and senior associate respectively, are members of Appleby’s funds and investment services department in the Cayman Islands.

Michelle Bolingbroke will also join the firm as a business development manager.

Jonathan Culshaw, Harneys’ global head of funds, said: “We look forward to welcoming Ian, Matthew and Jonathan to our global funds team, which has experienced significant growth over the last two years. The recruitment of these excellent lawyers builds on our momentum and stands testament to our commitment to build a leading Cayman Islands funds practice.”

Marco Martins, Harneys managing partner in the Cayman Islands, added: “In a short period of time, our Cayman Islands funds practice has carved out leading positions in key markets, particularly in Asia, Latin America, and parts of Africa, Europe and the Middle East. We have done that by getting closer to our clients, focusing on better understanding their needs and drivers, and delivering a seamless global service across times zones, languages and commercial practices.

“With the launch of a North America office last year we improved our ability to offer clients in key parts of North America similarly enhanced, more responsive and more attuned services.  The addition of Ian, Matt and Jon will enable us to take this offering further, and to deliver an even better service to clients in North America and globally.”

Peter Tarn, global managing partner, said: “We have been making significant investments across our transactional and contentious legal teams in the Cayman Islands and alongside that building capacity in our corporate and fiduciary businesses. The addition of Ian, Matthew, Jonathan and Michelle is another massive step forward in our ability to offer clients the kind of comprehensive and excellent service they need from a full service Cayman Islands practice.”
